Lab to Screen

The project ‘From Lab to Screen’, supported by the UK Subtitling Audiences Network, focused on translating academic research on subtitling reception and viewers’ experience into user-friendly reports for professionals and clients.

The project received input from various industry partners, including two network partners and the professional association ATAV. Researchers created three reports highlighting what viewers say, what helps viewing, what hinders viewing, and future possibilities for subtitling.

REPORT 1

Impact of using machine translation to create subtitles

REPORT 2

Impact of subtitling speed on the viewer experience

REPORT 3

Impact of subtitling quality on comprehension and engagement

If you want to know more details on the key aspects of the methodology, please download the document below.

If you are planning to publish a report of your research, we have also prepared some notes on how to report to a non-academic audience around seven key principles.

Invitation to collaborate

This project brought together findings from part of the available research. This research is accessible to all in the Zotero library created for the project.
This library aims to gather all available research on subtitling reception, and it will continue to grow.

Join us!
We invite researchers and industry professionals to send references to relevant studies not yet included in our Zotero library so that our library continues to grow. We hope this becomes a useful resource and a key point of reference for both young and established researchers.
